After a first year as a punk band, they began to create their own personal post-punk style: a very rhythmic -based music fuelled by the band's excellent drummer Johan Mörén, topped by extra percussion, wicked guitars, sax and a funk bass at the bottom of it all . The music was produced collectively and the band’s lead singer Tom Holmlund wrote the lyrics. In its first press release the group wrote: "The lyrics are very important, but they must go hand in hand with the music to work together for a mental / physical experience, simply call for both reflection and dance.” Their debutalbum “Jag…snäll” was released in 1983 and received a very positive response from the Swedish music critics. The readers of Sweden's biggest contemporary rock magazine Schlager voted Memento Mori as one of 1983’s best newcomers. In 1984 yet another critically acclaimed album "Detta är paradiset” was released. It was voted fourth by Schlager’s readers on 1984’s best Swedish album. From thefirst album began an intensive touring around the country with detours to the neighboring Nordic countries. Some music journalists even appointed Memento Mori as "Sweden's best live act." In the late eighties, the band went through a lot of line up changes, which delayed the release of their third and last LP “Våga leka”. In 1990 Memento Mori dissolved.

In 2007-2008Memento Mori was resurrected temporarily and did a number of gigs. Inconnection with the comeback a compilation album was released “Ur skymningen"(“From Dusk") in 2008, with recordings from the years 1982-1988.
