Blessed with a voice that suggests an early Joni Mitchell or Joan Biaz, Melanie Peterson, a Saskatoon born singer and songwriter has quietly become one of the brightest lights on the Toronto folk-pop scene.
Peterson was born and raised in the suburbs of Saskatoon; : her mother was ofNorwegian heritage, while her father's family came from Czechoslovakia. Her father and mother, were both guitar players and singers who played in a jug band while in medical school and Melanie sites growing up in a house filled with music and listening to her Dad sing Bob Dylan songs for her and her siblings as a key formative experience.
Melaniehas been referred to as “Mary Poppins with a broken heart” by the BBC and has been recognized as having “a beautiful voice” and being a “terrific songwriter” by Joe Warmington of the TorontoSun. She earned a spot within the independent music scene in TorontoMarch 2012, when she showcased her original music during CanadianMusicWeek,at the Royal York Library Bar and then again at the Cameron House for IndieWeek.She was invited back to perform two showcases at CMW 2013 and was sited by publicist Richard Flohil as one of the top ten Toronto artists not tobe missed at CMW. She launched her first full-length album UNBREAKABLE April 2013 at The Piston in Toronto. And followed that up with a triumphant NXNE showcase and an Ontario tour.
Melanie moved to Toronto from her home town Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to pursue a career in acting. She began working professionally as an actress immediately. Her favorite role to date: a guest staring roleon the Canadian comedy Jeff Ltd. Between acting jobs she often picked up the Gibson guitar her father had given her as a curious parting gift wondering “how do you play this thing?” She eventually asked her boyfriend, an intermediate guitar playerhimself, to teach her a few chords. She then began the second leg ofher artistic journey. Songwriting. The feedback she got each timeshe ventured out to play her songs for Toronto audiences wasencouraging. She was invited to host and perform her original songsin a monthly female singer-songwriter night at the renowned CameronHouse. The show was called Girls Girls Girls and the second Saturdayof every month between September 2009 and December 2012 Melanie alongside many of Toronto's top female singer-songwriters packed thatroom.
Melaniereleased a five song EP in 2010 called AFTER THE FALL and the reviewswere encouraging;

Herlatest release, a 6 song cover EP titled READ IT ON THE RADIO waspart of a six week digital download campaign in which Melaniereleased one new cover song every week from April 28th,2014 to June 1st,2014.
MelaniePeterson is now gearing up for sizzling hot summer playing as manyout of town gigs as she can handle. And in the fall she heads intothe studio to record songs for her sophomore album followed by a busywinter in which she will be planning a tour for her new album . 2015is likely to be a banner year for Melanie and her music.
