Alternative CCM rockers Chagall Guevara were led by singer/songwriter Steve Taylor, previously known for a series of well-received solo efforts before retiring from Christian music as a result of the controversy surrounding the satirical bent of his lyrics, particularly "I Blew Up the Clinic Real Good" from the album I Predict 1990.
He returned to duty in 1990, after forming Chagall Chevara with guitarists Dave Perkins and Lynn Nichols, bassist Wade Jaynes, and drummer Mike Mead; strongly influenced by the music of the Clash, the band signed to MCA to issue their self-titled 1991 debut LP, which earned the kind of mainstream media attention rarely afforded to CCM acts. However, label restructuring hindered the record's commercial hopes, and despite recording material for a planned sophomore effort, the group nevertheless disbanded in 1992. ~ Jason Ankeny
