Brazilian singer Maria Alvim was born in Belo Horizonte and quickly made a name for herself on the local scene after extensive voice training.
While supporting herself by singing on commercials, film soundtracks, and studio sessions, Alvim performed at musical gatherings around the country and eventually struck up a partnership with guitarist Rick Udler. The duo performed around Brazil, often with percussionist João Parahyba (beginning in 1993), in between various composition projects for Udler. In 1998, Udler and Alvim recorded their debut album, Rhythm and Romance, for Malandro Records. ~ Steve Huey
