Marco Antônio da Costawas born in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil in 1984. At 5 years old he began classical pianolessons. At 13 he discovered his love for the guitar. It was not long beforeMarco became a professional musician, joining the vibrant local music scene inNatal. He also studied music with some of the the biggest names in Rio Grandedo Norte and Brazil: Joca Costa, Manoca Barreto, Waldemar Ernesto, Lula Galvão,Nelson Faria, Alexandre Carvalho, Fernando Correa, Daniel Maudonnet, Rafael dosSantos and Vitor Santos.
After completing various courses and playing in several music festivals, Marcograduated first in Electric Guitar at EMUFRN (the Music School of UFRN –University of Rio Grande do Norte) and later from the University of Music andPerforming Arts in Graz, Austria (KUG - Kunstuniversität Graz). During his timeat KUG Marco had the opportunity to perform with such renown Jazz artists asDon Menza, Dick Oatts, and John Hollenbeck. KUG Lessons, classes and workshopsthat Marco attended were given and led by some of the most accomplished andhighly respected musicians and educators on the international Jazz scene: GuidoJeszensky, John Abercrombie, Peter Bernstein, Wolfgang Muthspiel, EdNeumeister, Ed Partika and Renato Chicco.
In2010, Marco Antonio da Costa released his first CD, "Painel,” featuring his own compositions. Marco has also received international recognition for his collaborations with several musical projects including: Antonio de Pádua Band,Na Maré Quartet, Diogo Guanabara Macaxeira & Jazz, Jatoba Latin Big Band and his own Marco Antonio da Costa Group which won Downbeat Magazine’s “Downbeat Student Music Award2012” for Best Latin Group.
Marco Antonio da Costa has participated in projects both as musician and arranger,recorded CD productions and/or performed on tour with the following artists:Diogo Guanabara & Macaxeira Jazz, Antonio de Pádua, Florian Zack, ZvezdanaNovakovic, Liz Rosa, Erick von Sohsten, Companhia Musical “Sobre asOndas,” Katja Cruz, Natalie Krainer, Camila Masiso, Rob Bargad, LuisBonilla, Sandy Cressman, Cinzia Catania, Fay Claassen, Miguel Zenon, JerimumJazz Big Band, KUG Jazz Orchestra, Jatobá Latin Big Band, and the HGM Jazz Orchestra Zagreb, amongothers.
Marco now lives with his wife and son in Klagenfurt, Austria, and is pursuing aMasters degree in guitar at KUG in Graz.
