Los Fabulocos are a band fronted by two roots music greats who have introduced a new sound they call Cali-Mex, a fusion of blues, rock, R&B, cancionero, and Chicano sounds that reflects the myriad music influences that come from being part of California's Mexican-American community.
Los Fabulocos were founded by Kid Ramos (born David Ramos), a celebrated blues guitarist whose résumé includes stints with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, the James Harman Band, and the Mannish Boys, as well as recording and touring as a solo artist. Ramos teamed up with vocalist and accordionist Jesus Cuevas, frontman with the celebrated East L.A. band the Blazers, known for their mixture of various Latin sounds with rock, blues, and surf accents; eager to play music that acknowledged all their cultural and creative influences, Los Fabulocos were born. Bringing aboard bassist James Barrios and drummer Mike Molina, the new band found a ready audience among blues and roots music fans in California and Texas, and they released their first album, simply called Los Fabulocos, through Delta Groove Music in 2008. A second album, fittingly called Dos, arrived in 2010. The group's progress was stalled in 2011 when Kid Ramos was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, an unusual form of cancer; members of the Los Angeles blues and roots music community banded together to raise money for Ramos' treatment, and Ramos played a small handful of shows with Los Fabulocos in 2012 and 2013 as his health permitted. ~ Mark Deming
