The rap duo of Lord Tariq (Sean Hamilton) and Peter Gunz (Peter Pankey) emerged from the Bronx under the name the Gunrunners.
Additionally, both enjoyed concurrent solo careers. Gunz was signed to Shaquille O'Neal's T.W.is.M. label, while Tariq, also a member of the Money Boss Players, appeared on tracks by the Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, Nas, and Mobb Deep. Signed to Columbia, where they set up their Codeine subsidiary, Tariq and Gunz made their proper debut in 1997 with the Steely Dan-sampling "Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)," a party anthem that crossed into the pop Ten Ten. Make It Reign, the duo's lone album, arrived much later, in June of the following year, and none of the follow-up singles came close to eclipsing their breakthrough. Tariq and Gunz continued to record, albeit in sporadic fashion. Gunz's son Cory became a noted rapper affiliated with Def Jam and Young Money. ~ Jason Ankeny
