A corporate-groomed house diva, Barbuscia attended the New York School of Music and the Performing Arts (as featured in the popular Fame television series) before being taken on by a modelling agency at the age of 17. In turn she won a recording contract with London Records dance subsidiary ffrr Records, who teamed her with producers of the calibre of Mike McEvoy (Soul II Soul), Paul Oakenfold and Gianfranco Bortolotti (of Italy’s Media team). The resulting material, typified by singles such as 1993’s ‘Fascinated’, was very pop-orientated and, it was suggested, none too authentic. Her record company had trouble convincing the dance world of the former model’s credentials, and perhaps her relationship with the Marquess Of Cholmondeley (30th in line to the throne) also hampered her musical credibility.
