24 December 1965, Manchester, Lancashire, England) and saxophonist Ed Jones, this quartet’s repertoire combines aspects of contemporary jazz, especially the continuing strain of hard bop, allied with funk and music of Latin America. Into the mix sometimes go touches of nu jazz and the result, presented with fire and power, is an exhilarating sound that has brought the group a dedicated following. In addition Brown also plays flügelhorn and occasionally sings, while Jones plays tenor and soprano saxophones and sometimes bass clarinet. Brown has played with musicians such as Benny Golson, Steve Grossman, Steve Wilson, Desmond Decker, Weldon Irvine and Paul Weller. His own bands have included Rhythm Indicative. Among the bands with which Jones has previously played are Jazz Africa, Rob Statham and, through the late 80s and on into the 90s, his own quartet and quintet. In the late 90s he was with trumpeter Mika Mylläri and the touring band that accompanied tours by Us3. Jones has also played with Us3 and with Incognito and Great Spirit. Both Brown and Jones are fluent improvisers and this quality is the fire within Killer Shrimp. Powerful yet lyrical, Killer Shrimp has proved to be an ideal frame for the players’ rich-toned inventiveness. Also in Killer Shrimp are Ben Hazleton (bass) and Troy Miller (drums).
