Restless in the confines of nu metal, frontman Jonathan Davis crossed borders by incorporating dubstep for Korn's 2011 album, The Path of Totality, before announcing that he would be taking it a step further with his upcoming Killbot project.
Under the alias J Devil, he teamed up with producers Sluggo and Tyler Blue to record a four-song EP that featured hard-hitting dubstep wobble, accompanied by underground electronic and emo influences. In the same way that Judas Priest vocalist Rob Halford's foray into electro-rock confounded metalheads, the music of Killbot polarized Davis' fan base, with metalhead purists insisting it was too drastic a departure and others greeting it favorably. Released on Dim Mak, Sound Surgery debuted on Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart at number 13 in November of 2012. ~ Jason Lymangrover
