“When I was about 7 or 8, I would grab my hairbrush, and climb on top of my bed – that was my stage.
Then I would sing and sing and sing. My brother said I made his ears bleed! But, I would watch concerts on TV and the Internet, and I knew, (watching those powerful voices), that was what I wanted to do – sing.”
Sing is probably an understatement for what Katie Steel does. The South Florida native is a volcano of vocal capabilities in a tiny package. Katie Steel allows words and music to collaborate and collide within for a massive explosion of song. Steel admits, “My look often fools people. They see me walk on stage, and they’re like – okay. Then I do what I love. I open my mouth and I sing. Shock and awe usually comes next.”
Steel’s bed-top performances led to her winning a coveted spot in the South Florida-based Starlent Performing Arts organization. From there, the 14 year old, born just days after Independence Day in 1998, began to sharpen her amazing vocal abilities in a very unusual way; especially for a young Jewish girl. Under the tutelage of Vocal Coach Anita Wilson (A Team Studios), she began honing her skills through the tremendously-challenging styling, emotionally-passionate and range-demanding genre of gospel music. Steel says when she first encountered
the music, “it blew me away. I had no idea what a run, or a riff was. I wanted to grasp the power that goes into lifting vocals in gospel music.” Steel’s gospel introduction came through the music of award-winning artists Smokie Norful,
Donnie McClurkin and others.
Still, there was more to the possibilities of vocal excellence evident in Steel’s voice. The fire and passion ignited when she was introduced to the incomparable Etta James, and the artistry of jazz and blues music. Katie Steel’s voice wonderfully introduces those whose ears are longing for powerhouse, authentic and sincere talent; with a performer who is fiercely soulful, powerfully engaging and as dynamic in voice and moves as Beyonce and Rihanna. Steel is, without a doubt, poised to raise the bar in the mainstream music industry.
Katie has toured with Starlent, performed with the Deep Fried Funk Band and performed covers of hits from Rihanna, Pink, Etta James, Beyonce and Taylor Swift (just to name a few). Steel, who believes that artists have a responsibility to be concerned about social ills, says her heart goes out to those who are victims of bullying. In fact, in 2013, she released a video against bullying covering The Script’s empowering tune, “Hall of Fame.” Her desire is also to be a striking image of what can happen when one perseveres, studies and stays true to their dreams. “I want younger girls to look at me and say, I can do this; and know that they absolutely can!”
When not singing, Steel says her second love is dancing. She caters to this love under the energetic and dynamic choreography and performance coaching of Athena Cameron (A Team Studios). Already an experienced actor, her credits include the independent short film, The Day after Christmas. Believing that performing is her life’s calling, Steel is quickly advancing to being a well-rounded professional who writes music from the heart of her life experiences, plays multiple instruments (including the piano and drums), and hopes to produce music as well; a talent she has been honing since the age of 10.
Steel said when she sings she wants her voice to resonate within for years to come. “I want people to say, she has a soulful voice bigger than her body, yet she is humble and she is a professional who respects what she has.”
Katie Steel’s first stage may have been a little girl’s blanket-covered, pillow top mattress, but with a voice that lifts listeners from their seat with an excited rush, she’s certainly positioned to grasp her award on a Grammy stage in the near future.
