Detroit native Karen Newman has long been a well-known face in Michigan and is seen regularly as the "Voice of the Detroit Red Wings." The sultry vocalist started singing in high school musicals, eventually ending up performing with a lounge band doing Top 40 tunes.
After her lounge act folded, years of studio work, singing on cruise ships, jingles, nightclub dates, and several winning appearances on Ed McMahon's "Star Search" followed. Newman landed jobs touring as a backup singer for Bob Seger, appearing in TV commercials for local radio station WRIF, and eventually sang the "Star Spangled Banner" before a high profile tennis tournament. After some limited engagements singing the national anthem for Detroit Pistons basketball games and Red Wings hockey games, the Red Wings approached her to perform the song before all home games. This has continued for the better part of a decade, giving the singer the exposure needed to release an album of classic rock-oriented pop songs called Moment in the Wind, and a holiday album What Christmas Means to Me. ~ Zac Johnson
