b. 1966, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England.
A gifted tenor saxophonist, as a youth Siegel studied classical saxophone and conducting at the University of East Anglia, Norwich. Through his father’s collection of jazz records, he developed an interest in the form. Resident in London since 1991, he has made a name with audiences, critics, and fellow musicians alike. Among musicians with whom he worked through the 90s are Julian Argüelles, Django Bates, Joey Calderazzo, Kirk Lightsey, Liam Noble, and as a member of Stan Sulzmann’s big band. As co-leader, with guitarist Phil Robson, of the Partisans, he has attracted considerable attention. This band, rounded out by Thad Kelly (electric bass) and Gene Calderazzo (drums), has toured Europe and appeared at numerous festivals to great acclaim. With his fluent avant garde styling on a hard bop base, Siegel is an immensely inventive improviser and has the enormous technique needed to bring his concepts to fruition. He is also proficient on bass.
