Let’s cut to the chase: though not a huge fan of the term, Carlisle-based musician & producer Follower #7 / John Laval is essentially a “singer-songwriter”.
He has a classical background (piano & French horn) and is an accomplished electric & acoustic guitar player, having practised obsessively and played in several rock / indie bands. Countless hours spent absorbing himself in the ethereal soundscapes and innovative music created by the likes of Aphex Twin, Leftfield, The Postal Service, Radiohead, PJ Harvey and Tom Vek have inevitably informed and helped evolve his sound & lyrical style.
Having said that he aims to create a musical style and sound that is individual and interesting (to himself as much as anyone else). His considered and often subtle use of electronic musical devices, programming and effects with live instruments and vocals helps create a sound that is at once intimate and expansive, and not easily replicated.
Lyrical themes include the incredible potential of human beings both to create and achieve amazing things and to completely lose their way & f*ck things up (sometimes simultaneously). John is not afraid to include himself in that assessment.
John has had airtime & plentiful (& gratefully received) support from BBC6 Music (Tom Robinson) and several local (UK) radio stations including BBC Radio Middlesbrough, BBC Radio Lancashire, BBC Radio Cumbria and CFM. John also wrote & performed the soundtrack for the short film ‘Killing Time’ that was shortlisted for a BAFTA award in 2012.
Follower #7’s debut single ‘Episode IV’ - including remixes by established Swedish electronic artists Singular and nordBeck - was released via the innovative alternative & electronic label Pitch9 Records in Nov 2013. F#7’s debut album ‘Absenteeism’ was released on the same label in Jan 2014.
