D.J. Nobrega, was born and raised in Oakland, California where she has had a love for music ever since she was born.
Her father worked for a local radio station "KDIA 13.10 AM" where he introduced the birth of his daughter Deborah on the air, he gave Deborah the initials D.J. thinking that she would become a DJ when she grew up. (See photos- in the Photostream)

Deborah spent a lot of time with her father at the station, and was able to pick out which records would become hits out of the record pool. Deborah enjoyed going to the l local Baptist Church, where her father would tape the gospel show for the station every Sunday.

Wile growing up, Deborah had a wide range of music taste and did extra chores around the house so that she could buy music and tickets for concerts that she wanted to attend.

She learned about Blues, Pop, Gospel, Jazz, R&B, Disco, Funk, and Rock & Roll; she was excited when Hip-Hop was born. DJ became a concert photographer during the New Jack Swing era with the help of her friend Alexander Mejia, a local DJ who worked for KMEL 106.1 FM.

Mejia enlisted DJ to photograph a group he was working with named "Flynamic Force". They changed their name to Sway & King Tech when they were working with ALL City Records in San Francisco. Shortly after, Mejia was able to get DJ an all-access pass to photograph the Annual Summer Jam Concerts which were held during the New Jack Swing Era (1987-1995).

Between the years 1987-1993, KMEL Summer Jam featured virtually every New Jack Swing Era performer including: LL Cool J, Ice Cube, Mariah Carrey, TLC, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, Bell Biv Devoe, MC Hammer, Public Enemy, Queen Latifah, The Boys, Tevin Campbell, Paris, and many, many more.

Although KMEL no longer puts on "Summer Jam" concerts the way it used to, it has inspired similar all-day superstar shows at radio stations around the country. But the magic that KMEL Summer Jam had (especially since it took place during the New Jack Swing Era during its prime) has yet to be successfully duplicated - See Photostream for photo: with KMEL Music Director Billy Vidal, KMEL Program Director (now Sony A&R Exec) Keith Naftaly, Ice Cube, KMEL General Manager Dick Kelley, and KMEL's Davey D (now a renown hip-hop journalist).

The Hip-Hop/R&B Summer Jam that has become so popular these days was born in the summer of 1987, when KMEL Program Director (at the time) Keith Naftaly put together the first show. Lisa Lisa & The Cult Jam headlined at KMEL Summer Jam #1 and two short years later, the KMEL Summer Jam had become the largest radio concert in the country, lasting for two days at a time and raising over a million dollars for local charities.

In 1997, DJ got married and settled down with her husband. When they moved to their new apartment, she met Karryl Smith, a.k.a. "Special One", who was a female rapper from the Hip-Hop group "The Conscious Daughters".

Karryl and Deborah, had so many things in common, such as Karryl's mother had worked at the same radio station as DJ's father, and they both had a serious love for Hip-Hop. DJ began helping Karryl with web design, push Karryl to get back into the groove.and enjoyed hanging out at the studio and going to shows.

In 2006, DJ's husband was deported to back to Mexico even though he had been in the US since the age of eleven. DJ was forced to move to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico with her husband.

Missing music, DJ wanted to bring artists from around the world to clubs in Mexico. Frustrated at her progress to make this happen, she talked her husband into letting her come back to the United States to pursue a degree in Music Business.

In 2010, she came back, and now is working on obtaining a Bachelors of Science in Music Business, and wants to work with artists when she graduates. In December of 2010, DJ's friend Karryl Smith passed away suddenly, and she dedicated this page to her.
