A West Coast underground rapper/producer with a self-depreciating sense of humor, Grip Grand made a name for himself with the full-length album Welcome to Broakland, recorded on four-track in his bedroom and self-released in 1999.
Later re-released in 2002 on well-regarded Bay Area label Bomb Hip-Hop Records, the album didn't sell much, but it did attract a significant if small following. One of those who heard the album and took interest in Grip Grand was DJ Design from the group Foreign Legion, who offered him a recording contract with his label, Look Records. Grip Grand made his label debut in 2004 with the Poppin' Pockets single, which he co-produced with DJ Design and which features AG from the group D.I.T.C. on the remix. In 2008 Grip Grand released his second album, Brokelore, on Look Records. ~ Jason Birchmeier
