Shortly after his dismissal from Pearl Jam in August 1994, Texas-born drummer Dave Abbruzzese returned home to the Dallas area and began to gather together some old friends to work on an informal project dubbed the Green Romance Orchestra.
While searching for a vocalist, a mutual acquaintance put Abbruzzese in touch with singer J. Paul Slavens; the two quickly struck creative sparks, and the group, with Slavens on board as Abbruzzese's primary collaborator, began to flesh out new material in earnest. Following many long hours of jamming in the studio and committing the results to tape, the band released their 1995 debut album, Play Parts I and IV, on a limited, mail order-only basis (many of the tracks from this album eventually wound up on the group's more widely available Play Parts I & V, released in late 1997). ~ Steve Bekkala
