FROM RAUNCHY ROCK’N’ROLL TO OL’ TIMEY AND BACK
Danish singer/songwriter Nils Maaetoft belongs to that rare breed of musicians who do not seek out the limelight and curry to fly-by-night musical trends. Nils has always taken his own circuitous path through the musical wilderness.
As frontman of rock’n’roll combo The Intellectuals, Nils launched his songwriting career. The band released two highly acclaimed albums in the mid-eighties, “Half A-live” and “Health and Happiness”. The latter was produced by legendary Vic Maile (of The Who/Live at Leeds fame).
The Intellectuals spent several years touring the club scene and the Danish festival circuit. When their record company suddenly closed down, The Intellectuals went their separate ways and Nils concentrated exclusively on
writing songs.
In 1990, he signed a publishing deal with Warner Chappell and released the critically acclaimed album “Cross Talk” in 1992 under his songwriter pseudonym, M.T. Purse. The album was a showcase for his latest compositions, several of which were soon covered by various Danish artists.
Warner Chappell sent Nils to Nashville to work on songs with some of their staff writers. After several trips to Music City U.S.A. and surrounding states, Nils released his first solo project under his own name. In February, 1998,
“Throwing Rocks at The Moon” was received with five- star reviews in Danish newspapers and music magazines.
After months on end working on the ”Throwing Rocks” project, Maaetoft’s love for early blues and string band music led to the decision that his next record project should be a no-frills home recording.
In the summer of 2000, a group of skilled musicians and friends who shared his passion for roots music assembled in his living room for some laid-back, low-key sessions. But after two days of recording, Nils concluded that the sessions were not yielding the desired results and the project was canceled. A handful of tracks were transferred to cassette tape (the medium of the day) and put aside. Two years later, his drummer casually wondered whatever happened to the session. Nils found the tape, played it and in hindsight was surprised at its quality, in particular the high level of musicianship. The tape was cleaned up and mastered for release as a limited edition radio promo CD
In the new millennium, Nils has made annual pilgrimages to Montgomery, Alabama to play concerts with one of his songwriting partners, Karren Pell and her husband, Tim Henderson. As the Capitol Heights Hillbillies,
The trio plays a broad mix of original material, as well as Hank Williams, Stanley Brothers and Carter Family greats.
Nils is also known for throwing the odd rock’n’roll standard into their set.
On rare occasions, Nils also performs on his own, presenting an eclectic musical mix, ranging from rock’n’roll classics to ol’ timey and back again.
