Experience Unlimited was the original full name of the Washington, D.C., band that later shortened its name to E.U. and became one of the city's definitive go-go artists.
Before their commercial success in the latter half of the '80s, however, Experience Unlimited was a more spiritual, jam-oriented outfit that took their name from Jimi Hendrix's Are You Experienced?; they evolved into a jazzy, funky groove band that took some of their cues from Earth, Wind & Fire. Signed to the Black Fire label -- along with the similar-sounding D.C. act Oneness of Juju -- Experience Unlimited released their debut album, Free Yourself, in 1977. They went on to issue the 12" single "Knock Him Out Sugar Ray" in 1980, plus a low-profile LP, Just the Way You Like It, on Inner City in 1981. As E.U., of course, they went on to score the biggest hit of D.C.'s largely localized go-go movement, "Da Butt." ~ Steve Huey
