This Icelandic recording act is a partnership between friends and studio partners Steindór Kristinsson and Bjarni Thor Gunnarsson.
The duo take their name from an Icelandic word meaning ‘means many audio sources that become one, or sound as one’, claiming that the moniker is particularly apposite since it echoes the dynamics of their collaboration. Prior to the genesis of Einóma and their intriguing, mysterious strain of experimental electronica, Kristinsson and Gunnarsson initially collaborated on films, writing scripts and playing with sound and camera techniques. As their interest in film diminished, the duo began composing their own recordings somewhere between the experimental electronic music that they say they had been listening to for years and the ambience that they had hoped to attain with their short films. Einóma’s subsequent experiments with rhythm prompted the release of their debut EP, Floating Point By Zero, via the frequently intriguing Icelandic label Uni:form and tracks from this release subsequently appeared on the 42 More Things To Do In Zero Gravity/Part One compilation of Icelandic ambient music. The name of Einóma’s 2002 debut album, Undir Feilnótum, roughly translates as ‘in a tough spot’ and the release seemed darker and more oppressive than much of the neo-ambient music coming out of Iceland. Kristinsson and Gunnarsson claim that their intent with the album was to continue a story begun on Floating Point By Zero and to be sustained with future releases.
