Thomas Clair is a Mikmaq artist from the Elsipogtog band in N.B, (pop.
3200) Thomas was taken from his band at a young age and sent to a Residential school. Four years later he was returned to his community when he was 11 years old. At the age of 13 he left the reserve and hitchhiked around New Brunswick. Then, at the age of 17 he made his way to Ottawa, ON where he found work as a dishwasher. He held a succession of manual jobs from dish-washing, cleaning, construction work , and eventually got promoted to foremen of a construction site. Still thinking there something missing in his life, he starting painting with acrylic paint on canvas and this is where his artistry came alive. He was more fulfilled and happy when he was painting and so he left his job in construction and started his new job as an artist. Through his artistic exploration he began to rediscover his Mi'kmaq culture and heritage. From that point on everything he did was true to his culture. His paintings changed in to Mikmaq art, he began to attend spiritual ceremonies, like sweats, cultural gatherings and powwow's. To further expand on his artistry he became a traditional dancer. Traditional dancing then lead to opportunities to work as an actor, Hollywood came calling. His first role was playing a warrior in the movie “Scarlet letter”, then playing a chief in “The New World”, and the evil sorcerer Tadodaho in “First Nations Movie”. Because of his love for music, and in particular the blues, he learned to play the guitar. Over the years, during his travels he played his music to soothe his soul. He progressed from singing his blues songs to friends, to performing on stage at a number of venues, such as Hard Rock Cafe (Toronto), Stage Red (Tyendinega), Monteal Theater (Montreal), Fledermas Cabaret (Vienna) Currently he his working on his first CD titled "Contemporary Mi'kmaq Blues" the tracks contain a mix of both English and Mi'kmaq language. His wish is to bring his culture and language to a global audience through the release of this CD.
