Biography
Folk group "DrevA"(www.myspace.com/drevafolkrus) was found in 1989 as a branch of the

theatre"Perekriostok" and specialized in Russian folk and urban songs andmusic up to this time.

Repertoireof the group is built on the materials of the expeditions in the differentregions of Russia:

Belgorod, Voronezh, Briansk regions and also in the Cossakstanitsas of Don and Kuban. ..

The group members learn the songs using expeditionrecords and also in the direct contact with

countrysingers and musicians. The folk group doesn't use the songs from the noteeditions, the

performanceof the group is based on improvisation as it is usual in traditional countrysinging. The

members ofthe group aspire to authentic manner of singing without some kinds ofarrangement.

The important part of this manner is keeping thenature sound of each singer voice.

The actors themselves take part in theexpeditions, master the instruments, design and make

costumes.

The songs of above-mentioned regions of Russia aremarked differ from each other. The group

masters themanners of singing of the few regions there for it has the opportunity to makebright and

interestingperformances. For example, Bryansk tradition of singing is mainly female. Thisregion is

the placewhere the most old pagan songs are still kept. Belgorod tradition is mainlyfemale too, but

thereexists archaic male wind-instrument, in Russian "caluka". It is madefrom dry stalk and the

sound ofthis pipe instrument remind of wind howl.

The Don and Kuban tradition of singing is the maleas a rule. These songs are not so old as

Southernand Western and singing is often accompanied by playing on Russian accordion, balalaika,

guitar, drums, wheel-lyre, tambourine. The wonderful feature of Cossak songs is uppersoaring

treblevoice. Repertoire of "DrevA" includes unique Cossak romances recordedin stanitsa Oust-Buzulook of Don region.

So far as the group includes both the women and the men, it can performthe songs of

differenttraditions.

Group can have performance on different places: musicclubs, music hall, open-air stages,

churches, theatre stages, street performances, restaurants... Our program very flexibleand group has

the bigrepertoir: songs, music, folklore games with spectators...

We can offer a workshop by Russian national tradition (a sound, the song, dance, musical

instruments)both for adults and for children. The group also has the program for childrenand can

work inchildren's establishments. We have an operational experience with foreignchildren in

Switzerland,Finland, The Netherland, Croatia, Italy, France…
