DJ Shakira

is Shakira Benavides, who is the co-founder of one of Barcelona's best collectors shops, Wah Wah Records. Since opening its doors in 1992, it is a must-see store, not only for Dj's, but for all music-lovers. Thanks to her work at Wah Wah, her musical sessions as Dj have encompassed a great range of styles and genres especially featuring exotica, downtempo, rare grooves, latin rhythms, funk, soul, jazz and breaks. Her tastes also span from electronica, psychedelic, lounge, r'n'r, garage, postpunk and disco.

Her premiere as Dj was in 1995, but it wasn't until Sept of '97, when she officially debuted as part of an all-girl dj collective called Las Diyei-esas, that she decided to focus her artistic efforts on the turntables. Since then, her career as Dj has taken her throughout Spain and has covered practically all of Barcelona's best clubs. She has moved people to the dancefloor for 5 years with her lounge and latin sounds at Club Dot. She has spun at major outdoor festivals in Barcelona, Tarragona, Zaragoza, Vasc Country and Florence (Italy). The array of private events Dj'd by Shakira vary from art exhibitions (Esther Planas - Barcelona '97) to the 15th anniversary party for Marie Claire magazine at the Edificio Real Fábrica de Tapices in Madrid, to promotional event by JP Gaultier including a very special evening at the Pabellon Miers Van Der Roer (Oct '08).Her involvement in the Barcelona music scene also includes her collaboration with the Dj collective Groovin' Barcelona who offer monthly events highlighting soul, funk, rare grooves, latin kicks, indie hiphop and breaks.

Her knowledge and expertise in different musical styles has also brought her to television and radio waves. After guest- hosting the show Plan B on BTV, she has also hosted her own program which ran for 3 years on Radio Contrabanda called La canción de la 2ª Luna (The Song of the Second Moon). In 2004 and 2005, she hosted a monthly show called Blancas y Negras (The black and whites) at Dostrece Internet Radio, which took a pedagogic look at music created in the second half of the 20th century. In late 2007, she contributed to the program Miopia at Radio Catalunya and in 2008 has been interviewed, while spinning a live set, on the program Crossfader at ScannerFM. In May '08, she was interviewed by the magazine Dones representing one of Barcelona's important female Dj icons. 2008 has also seen her interviewed by Un Altre Mon (Another World) at ComRadio but this time as soundscape artist.

Now she's a co-founder, musical advisor, director and producer of some programs in BipolarFM, a radio on-line (www.bipolarfm.com)
