After over a decade of experience as guitarist to one of Australia's much - loved rock groups You Am I, Davey Lane is going solo with his debut EP 'The Good Borne of Bad Tymes', set for release on September 6th, 2013.
Since joining You Am I at the tender age of 18, Lane has notched up six albums, an ARIA award, numerous world tours and shows with rock icons such as The Rolling Stones, The Who and The Strokes.
Lane's former band The Pictures released two albums; 'Pieces Of Eight', a Triple J Album of the Week, and 'Kicking Indifference' which received rave reviews including the following from The Daily Telegraph - "The second album from You Am I guitar slinger Davey Lane is a revelation of ambition, master songwriting and superb musicianship. It's the album Jet want to make and the one Oasis tried to with their last effort."
In addition, Lane has been a fierce musical collaborator throughout his career. Touring with the likes of Lanie Lane, Jim Keays and Evan Dando (TheLemonheads), Davey also joined Chris Cheney (The Living End) as guitarist of rock supergroup the Wrights, whose version of Stevie Wright’s song 'Evie' debuted at #2 on the ARIA charts. Contributing his talents to Nuggets: Antipodean Interpolations of the First Psychedelic Era, Warner Brothers Records’ tribute to the legendary Nuggets compilation, Davey currently features as the sole solo artist.
His songwriting and recording collaborations are just as impressive and all-embracing, including co-writing with Jimmy Barnes, Jim Keays, Nic Cester(Jet), and hip-hop artist Phrase (on the 2011 Triple J hit 'Apart'). He has featured as a guest on TV's Rockwiz and has been the subject of several articles in Australian Guitar Player magazine.
Mid Feb 2013, Davey released a free downloadable demo track, 'You’re The Cops I’m The Crime', showcasing a new sound. Just a glimpse of what this Melbourne musician had in store, with Musicfeeds describing it as ‘a cornucopia ofinfluences, all interwoven into a fresh new vibe for Lane’. The demo version quickly made headway on radio, ranking #8 on the AIRIT Now Charts within its first week and receiving spins on triple j and community radio nation wide.
Already garnering support from tastemakers, Street Press ‘Beat Magazine’ and ‘Drum Media Perth’ selected the track as Single Of The Week, calling it ‘a ripper electro track’ and ‘a big, big hit’. It also gained great feedback online, with many blogs and major music websites such as Fasterlouder, ToneDeaf, themusic.com.au and Mess + Noise championing the track and being selected for numerous mixtapes.
‘A dark sliver of pop with one of those great single note quasi-funk-guitarriffs through the verse and a big, sweeping chorus replete with plenty of synthpads that add a kind of lush feel to the song.’ – TheMusic.com.au
Taking his new material on the road, Davey started off 2013 on a high note, nailing a support slot for indie rock legend Bob Mould on his sold-out Corner Hotel show in March. Following this, Davey embarked on a national Australian tour in support of ARIA nominated artist Bob Evans in April/May before landing a covetable support slot for international rock icon Todd Rundgren around Australia. To top off his tremendous efforts thus far in 2013, Davey was invited to play at the music industry event, Bigsound.
With so many achievements already received for the demo version of 'You’re The Cops I’m The Crime', Lane headed back into the studio, teaming up with legendary producer Tony Buchen (John Butler Trio,Tim Finn) to re-record the song and make it his first official single. Accompanying the track will be the remix by renowned hip-hop producer M-Phazes (Kimbra, Bliss n Eso, Drapht), both released on iTunes on August 9th.
Scheduled for a September 6th release, Lane’s first solo EP, 'The Good Borne of Bad Tymes', will be quickly followed up by two more EP’s, one slated for a January 2014 release and the third due out in May. With a sound undeniably his own, the songs grouped together on his upcoming releases will form his grandest musical statement and most definitive work to date.
