D’MANYISSA BIOGRAPHY
Democrito Adolfo da NatividadeManyissa is his real name. He is the son of Manuel Adolf Elias and Naidy Mariada Natividade. His stage name is D’Manyissa. He is a singer/songwriter fromMozambique. Writes in many music styles, like R&B, Soul,Gospel, jazz,African Jazz, African, Pop/Rock, Hip-Hop, Brasilian etc. Even in English andPortuguese also. Sometimes in Ronga, a local language from Maputo, the capitalof Mozambique.
Started writing songs in 1992.Writing songs is his passion. He writes every time he is inspired. It is the resultof intuitive knowledge. He is guided by the feeling, by logic, and self taughtability. He thinks it is a result of listening to a lot of music in many genres.He started to listening to music in the early years of his life, because hislate father had left a wide range of vinyl, like Roberta Flack, ArethaFranklin, Nat King Cole, Mahalia Jackson, Brook Benton, Otis Redding to name afew, including African and Mozambican music. He remembers that even when he waskid, loved listening to the song “Rainy night in Georgia” by Brook Benton. So he cultivated thelistening to music, and as time went by discovered other singers like ChakaKhan, Natalie Cole, Mary J Blige, Sarah Vaughan, Sade, Sting, Anita Baker, Jodeci,BabyFace, karyn White, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, John Legend, ReginaBelle, Mariah Carey, Kelly Price, Rachelle Ferrell, Dianne Reeves, BobbyMcFerrin, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, between others.
“My mother and uncles say that mylate father had a talent to write songs and to sing as well”.
From 1994 to 1998 went to Brasilfor studies in Library and Information Science, where he qualified in Honoursin Library and Information Sciences. While studying there had the chance tolisten to more diverse music.
Went Back to Mozambique in 1998. In2000 Started singing. But previously had singing classes having as a coach Mrs. Isabel Mabote in the National School ofMusic. At same time had singing practice being accompanied by the greatmusician Ivan Mazuze on piano when Ivan Mazuze was available. In this practicehe was singing his own songs. Ivan Mazuze complimented his songwriting skills,so it encouraged and motivated him to write more and more.
After some time participated inJam sessions and then integrated the Group Jazz Maputo in which the leader wasMr. Orlando da Conceicao, as one of the vocalists, singing jazz standards fromthe likes of Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughan, Natalie Cole.
After some time he recorded somesongs that are being playied in local radios in Mozambique. Songs like “I’llremain in your life” , “A tiko dzahombe” and “Nossa uniao”. He wrote songs toother singers like Ancha Martins “Tequero muito”. With this song Ancha participated in a music contest organized byRadio Mozambique, and she won the award for “Best Vocal Female Performance”. “Orouxinol” is another song of him performed by Ancha Martins and RaimundoMauele. XIXEL Langa recorded his songwith the title “U buya hi kwini”. She participated with this song in a songcontest organized by Radio Mozambique and won the award of “Best femalenewcomer”. Acucena Matola recorded the song “Compromisso real”. Other singersare about to record more songs of him.
Another band in which he was avocalist is the UEM BAND , which comprised students of the University EduardoMondlane, that had passion for music also. In this band he was singing his ownoriginal songs.
Have worked mostly with guitarplayers such as Albino Mbie, Angelico Manhique, Ivo Machel and the pianist RaimundoMauele in Maputo, recording demos of some songs. The first experience was withIvan Mazuze. In South Africa, Cape Townhad the chance to work with Vuyani, BokaniDyer and Allou April in recording demos of some of his songs.
A Brasilian singer with Degree inMusic from the Berklee College of Music in Boston is in the process ofrecording her EP, which will include a song of him intituled “Conta comigo”.
Currently is in Cape Town, doinga Masters in Library and Information Sciences, at the University of the WesternCape , in the Department of Library and Information Sciences.
