b. 1967, Brooklyn, New York, USA.
J. Quest began singing in public at the age of 10 when he toured the USA as soloist with the New York Boys’ Choir. As a child he had sung along to his heroes Marvin Gaye, Whitney Houston and Luther Vandross. In 1993, he met Lisa Lisa while in the studio with his manager and through her he was introduced to the producer Junior Vasquez, who asked Quest to sing on several tracks on which he was working, two of which later appeared on his debut album (‘Brand New Luv’ and ‘Behind The Scenes’). On The Quest Is On Quest also sang with hip-hoppers Pudgee The Phat Bastard (the first US single, ‘Anything’) and Ill Al Skratch (‘Up And Down’). The latter was a remix of a song that had originally appeared on the soundtrack to the film Jason’s Lyric. The music combined urban hip-hop with R&B in a manner most readily reminiscent of R. Kelly, doubtlessly aiming for a similar target audience.
