With a vital and refreshing take on independent college rock of the mid-late ‘80s, Sydney based dreampop act Community Radio are set to release their debut full length album Serious Magic on their own label Novella Records 21 September 2012.
The record follows on from two nationally aired radio singles Happening for Us and Terrible History. Both tracks have been lauded on a range of music blogs, and enjoyed great rotation on Sydney’s FBi Radio, Brisbane’s 4ZZZ, and received airplay on Triple J, 2SER and a host of regional community radio stations from Kalgoorlie to Mornington.
Serious Magic is a stunning collection of simple, finely honed songs that fall on the right side of pop (the slightly darker, edgier, guitarier side). From the thundering-yet-stripped-back sound of Terrible History, to the “beautiful, woozy, hazy pop” of Happening for Us - the record has already garnered comparisons to a diverse range of acts that contributed to American college radio’s mid ’80s heyday – such as R.E.M., The Feelies, The Go-Betweens and New Zealand’s Flying Nun label. The band try to avoid anything that might come across as pastiche, says Cameron - “but I just hope some of the excitement I feel about the music and the community vibe of that time rubs off on our music”.
The record was put down LIVE in Cameron’s parents’ house in Canberra, and took just one weekend to record, using small guitar amps, a tiny drum kit (no cymbals!) and an unreliable ’80s Farfisa organ. Now mixed and mastered by Wayne Connolly, it sounds a whole lot larger than the living room it was recorded in.
Sydney based Community Radio was formed in 2010 by Cameron Emerson-Elliott, who also plays guitar with noise pop outfit Songs, indie rockers Youth Group, and was a founding member of late nineties punchy mod troupe The John Reed Club. Community Radio also consists of Patrick Matthews (Youth Group, The Vines and The Jewel and The Falcon), Mal McKernan (La Huva) and Jen Kevin.
