The Asian nation of Singapore isn’t usually considered one of the world capitols of rock & roll, but the band Suicide Solution proves that full strength old-school heavy metal can thrive there.
Named for one of Ozzy Osbourne's most infamous songs, Suicide Solution play tough, no-frills metal, embracing the energy and attitude of thrash but with a more melodic approach, bluesy accents and guitar work that snarls as much as it barks. Suicide Solution were formed by singer and guitarist Joe Suicide (born Joe Ferdinands), and he’s been the sole constant member throughout the group’s history. Joe comes from a musical family, and his father and uncles are members of a long-running band called Gypsy. In 1995, Joe recorded Suicide Solution's first demo tape, on which he performed nearly all the vocals and instruments himself. In 1998, Suicide Solution released their first album, The Dark Adventures, and Joe put together a version of the group that could play live and began gigging regularly in Singapore, though Joe was also playing with Gypsy and a side project, Hello Pussy. Suicide Solution went on hiatus in 2005, and Joe worked with a handful of other hard rock bands, including Bad Obsession and Finders Keepers, but in 2006 Suicide Solution released their long-awaited second album, Halloween Holocaust, and a new edition of the group began playing shows in 2008. In 2009, the latest lineup of Suicide Solution - Joe on guitar and vocals, Evigan X on guitar, Rudolf Stryker on bass and Faust behind the drums - issued their third album, Shake Well Before Abuse, released through their own label, Media Corpse. ~ Mark Deming
