Named after the dark confection loved the world over -- chocolate -- Indonesian pop group Cokelat formed in Bandung in 1996.
The band would go through a number of roster changes in its time, but would continue to release albums and build up a sizable following, regionally speaking. Their first album, Untuk Bintang -- preceded by an appearance on a compilation record -- was released in 2000. Rasa Baru, their second full-length, followed in 2001 and was reissued in special-edition format a year later. In 2003 and 2004 their output was steady, including two studio albums -- Segitiga in 2003 and Dari Hati in 2004 -- and they made an appearance on the 2004 Ian Antono tribute album. In 2006 Cokelat released the ultimate testament to a band's popularity, the best-of compilation in 2006, entitled Tak Pernah Padam. But that was not to be their only release that year, as Cokelat also issued the album Untukmu Indonesiaku, which was a collection of Indonesian national hymns. ~ Chris True
