The pair had met when they were backing former Parliament keyboard player Bernie Worrell at a local club. Deciding to form their own group, they set about writing material and auditioning female singers, eventually choosing Pauline Henry in 1987. With the duo’s desperation mounting, her successful audition was held over the telephone, after which she was flown up from London for sessions. After signing to CBS Records in 1988 they finally released their debut single a year later. ‘1-2-3’ was produced by Jazzie B. (from Soul II Soul), a band to whom the Chimes were frequently compared. Their biggest UK breakthrough came in 1990 when they covered U2’s ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’. Apparently approved by Bono, the cover version was chosen when the band heard Henry singing it in the studio. Aided by an appearance on the mainstream television show Wogan, it eventually went Top 5 in both the UK and USA. The boys also contributed to old friend Paul Haig’s solo album during 1990, and produced several other artists. Subsequent minor hits included ‘True Love’ and ‘Love Comes To Mind’, before Henry left for a solo career midway through sessions for a second album.
