In the heyday of the Viper Room, circa '93-'99, renowned club runner and Hollywood nightlife impresario Big Daddy Carlos (promoter and house DJ of Viper Room at the time) got fed up with of all the post-grunge anti-"show" rock 'n' roll bands and finally decided to take matters into his own hands and bring together some of his closest friends (top musicians in Hollywood) to give LA something to remember.
In 1996, Chickenhawk took the stage for the first time, armed with four songs. They opened for Oasis at Viper Room -- and the story goes that the head of MCA Records, Michael Rosenblatt, told them he wasn't sure whether it was the visual of a shirtless, leather pants, feather boa-wearing Big Daddy with a cowboy hat, or the midget backup singers, or the transvestite go-go girls, or the mariachis -- or a combination of them all -- but it led him to make the statement, "They're one of the greatest bands I've ever seen." The consensus of the packed house was they arguably blew the biggest band in the world off that stage that night, and it will also go down as the highest bar tab for a single band in the history of the Sunset Strip. Rosenblatt, at the urging of k.d. lang, gave the boys a record deal the next day .... and the 'Hawk was born.
What happened during the next five years with shows in Texas, San Francisco and a residency at the Viper, was nothing short of legendary. The Chickenhawk stories of rock 'n' roll debauchery and lawlessness became the only thing more talked about than their shows (The band was exonerated of all charges).
But unlike the greatest rock 'n roll bands of all time that never reached commercial success, Chickenhawk will live in Hollywood folklore as the band's band that reigned at the Viper Room and Sunset Strip. For those who were part of the afterhours and rock 'n' roll club scene that was the '90s ... If you were there, you know. .Viva La Rock 'N' Roll!
