Cartoon Boyfriend combines three very different musicians to create a sound that is all over the map.
From hip-hop covers of country hits like "Friends in Low Places" to the self-effacing stylings of "Two Immigrants and a Hick," the songs on their debut album, Nipples, make the most jaded listeners take notice. Holly Wright, from Gary, IN, brings a harder, hip-hop sensibility as well as mid-western pop sound. The punky Tommi Tillman, from Sandford, NC, is hard-edged and aggressive, which belies his southern roots. Boi, from Rome, Italy, brings a glamorous edge to the trio, emulating David Bowie and Robert Smith. Together they make strange, but fascinating music. ~ Stacia Proefrock
