Brothers Frank and Willie McWilliams teamed with cousins L.D. and Chester Mayfield to sing in local churches. After a spell as paratroopers in the Korean war, they returned in 1954 and changed tempo to R&B, recording demos that earned them a session with Apollo Records in November. ‘That’s All’ was their debut release in April 1955, followed two months later by ‘Hush-A-Meca’. Of more interest was their third release, ‘I Don’t Want You To Go’. This song’s melody (written by Chester Mayfield) was later reprised by Lowman Pauling for his ‘Dedicated To The One I Love’, which became a Top 3 Billboard hit twice over when later covered by the Shirelles in 1961 and the Mamas And The Papas in 1967. After one further ballad at the end of 1955, ‘My Baby’s Love’, the group retired to the local club scene for the next two years. ‘Please Be Mine’ was eventually released in November 1957, by which point the group’s fortunes were in terminal decline. ‘You Are My Queen’ became their final release a year later.
