In 1981, a new rock band formed in Toronto, Canada, calling itself Breeding Ground.
The original lineup consisted of lead singer John Shirreff, guitarist Hugh Gladish, bassist Jonathan Strayer, and drummer Ken Jones. After a year of playing club gigs, the group landed a deal with the Mannequin Record label and released a self-titled EP. Jones was later replaced by ex-Kinetic Ideals drummer Jon Davies. They went back into the studio, recording an EP which was picked up by alternative Brampton radio station 101.5FM, the Edge. They went back into the studio in 1984 to record an LP - Tales Of Adventure. Later on Davies was replaced by drummer Kevin Hunter. They shot a video for "This Time Tomorrow" but after a five year project stint, Strayer called it quits and the band effectively disbanded. Within a year, the remaining members together with producer Chris Wardman and bassist Gary Quinn reformed a second phase of the group. Over the next few years the band made two further music videos, and another full-length album. By the time the '80s had lived out its last hooray, so had Breeding Ground.

After releasing that debut EP in 1982, abundant airplay on college campuses earned the group great word of mouth reviews and plenty of exposure to young adults. Breeding Ground stayed independent and released a sophomore EP in 1983 containing the big tunes "Slaughter" and "Reunion". In 1984, the LP "Tales of Adventure" was released, again on Fringe Product. During the next year, several singles followed, especially the upbeat song "Happy Now I Know". Still, for all their growing popularity, the band members were on shaky ground. There was a split up, but some of the guys managed to pull the tattered pieces back together for another try around 1987 and finally in 1989 completed an album titled "Obscurity and Flair", again distributed/released under the Fringe Product label.
