Thesix-piece band from Berne, Switzerland plays a unique style based on ska,klezmer and eastern European gipsy music. The six musicians, all of them with adegree for classical music, play with an amazing precision that somehow theymust have taken away from an old Swiss watch-maker living nearby. The storyof Molotow Brass Orkestar starts somewhere in foggy November 2007 at the BernUniversity of the Arts (HKB). A handful of classical of students studyingclassical music looking for a break of the classical concert schedulesassembled and started to play Balkan folk music. After a short time today‘s six-pieceband Molotow Brass Orkestar was born.
Theband developped quite fast. Backed by their powerful lady on Drums, MarianneGraber, the five horn blowers started to mix whatever style of music theyliked. Thus Molotow’s unique mix of Balkan and Swiss Folk music showinginfluences of klezmer, ska or even electronic beats started to emerge. Combinedwith their catching vitality they soon persuaded every kind of audience tocheer for them. Invitations to renowned festivals where coming in soon.
In the lastcouple of years, Molotow Brass Orkestar played at Brass:Durham International Festival in England, Lucerne Festival, European Brass BandChampionships, or at the Fêtes de Genève. Other whereabouts are BierhübeliBern, Abart Club Zürich, Buskers Lugano, Buskers Neuchâtel, StadtspektakelLandshut to name only a few. The band can be found on the soundtracks of threemovies and has been featured on radio on at least three continents.
In February2010 the band presented their first album „Molotow Brass Orkestar“ with thedutch label WM Recordings. It is a portrait of the band’s first three years ofexistence. Besides eastern European traditional, the album shows some rewardinginterpretations of Swiss Folk Songs played in an eastern European gipsy style.A tribute to the Tscharnergut neighborhood can be heard in the composition“Czarny Forever” by Reimar Walthert.
