The pair met in the early 2000s when Blair was studying at St. Martin’s College with Mogg’s girlfriend at the time. However, they didn’t start collaborating on music until 2007, when Mogg was working on a project for his Supersoul Recordings label and needed a vocalist. Blair flew to Berlin to record with Mogg and Supersoul’s co-founder, Xaver Naudascher; the results were the single Moon Unit, Pt. 4, and Mogg and Blair took the name Moon Unit for their collaboration. The duo collaborated via the Internet, with Blair sending tracks with vocals and guitar for Mogg to flesh out with beats and sequencing. In 2008, DFA released all of Supersoul’s catalog, including Moon Unit’s work, for worldwide distribution. The duo’s first full-fledged release was 2009’s Italo-disco-influenced Connections EP, which featured a remix by Ewan Pearson. That fall, Mogg and Blair changed their group’s name to Boy of Girl and released the single Hot Chocolate Boy on Mogg’s own label, Off the Uncertain Button. ~ Heather Phares
