A country gospel singer and guitarist, Smallwood attracted localized but enthusiastic audiences from the early 70s onwards. He has worked mainly in country gospel and has maintained his popularity with the Christian music audience throughout three decades. Among Smallwood’s early recordings, mainly for Old Homestead Records and Brite-star Records, have been ‘Have You Seen Papa’s Coal Loadin’ Hands’, ‘Rebel Soldier, Your Memory Will Never Die’, and ‘Let Me Tell You About A Preacher’ (all recorded with Charlie Moore And The Dixie Partners), ‘I’m Still Amazed’, ‘I Knew A Mother’, ‘It’s A Long Way Up’, ‘Self Righteous Fool’, ‘My Anchor Holds’, ‘Papa’s Pride’ and ‘Remains Of My Heart’. For several years, he has hosted Bob Smallwood’s Pickin’ Time, a television show aired Monday to Friday by Living Faith Television. The show is based in Abingdon, Virginia. He can also be seen at weekends on Best Of Bob. Among artists with whom Smallwood has appeared is Ardetta Adkins.
