Of local WA interest Bernard has completed a series of seven songsconcerning the history and characters of WA’s Rottnest Island and was commissioned to write four songs for theopening of the Western Australian Maritime Museum. These all featured on his CD ” West “

His community music work was recognised in 2010 when he became the face of the Perth Residential White Pages phone book for that year.

Bernard's shows focus on his original songs which are accompanied by a gutsy blues ragtime guitar style and often includes some classy instrumentals. He is a performer who likes to laugh with the audience and the light hearted delivery often belies the hard hitting issues in the songs.

In 2003 his success as a songwriter was recognised at the Port Fairy Festival (Victoria) where he was named artist of the year and also won the prestigious Lawson Patterson Songwriting Award for that year.

He is a prominent guest at Australia’s major acoustic music festivals, including the Woodford Festival (Queensland), Port Fairy Festival (Victoria), the National Folk Festival (Canberra), the Bridgetown Blues Festival, and the Fairbridge and Nannup Folk Festivals .

He has regularly toured the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Singapore and has performed with international artists such as Gene Pitney, Taj Mahal, Foster and Allen, Ralph McTell and Richard Thompson. He had the honour of opening the late Stephane Grapelli’s final concert at the Perth Concert Hall.

Bernard's political songs reflect his beliefs on refugees, Aboriginal issues and war and weapons manufacturers. He still upholds the old adage that a songwriter’s job is not to squash the cockroaches but to turn the light on in the kitchen. His award-winning song Gardens Of Death was adopted by the International Red

Cross for their campaign to ban land mines. Money raised from sales of the CD single went to land mine victims.

During1991-1992 Bernard appeared weekly on ABC TV as a political satirist for the 7.30 Report in Brisbane, summing up the week's events in song. Prior to that he wrote topical satire for ABC Radio in Perth, Ted Bull’s breakfast show and the Kevin Hume drive show.

Bernard’s busy schedule, other than touring, comprises community concerts in and around Western Australia, instant choirs for conferences and business functions, and tailor made songs for the occasion. He coordinates and hosts the City of Perth’s weekly Tuesday Morning Show and runs song writing , singing and guitar workshops.

Since 1997Bernard has been the musical director of the Working Voices Social Justice Choir which often performs at rallies, social justice events such as fundraisers for Timorese and Phillipines communities , union events ,local festivals and has twice performed at the National Folk Festival in Canberra.

2007 saw the birth of the Spirit of the Streets choir, originally put together from sellers of the Big Issue magazine and broadened out to include any potential singer from a disadvantaged background, or marginalised in some way. The choir goes from strength to strength with an average of 40-50 performances a year for community groups mental health and welfare organisations and schools.

In 2008 the Spirit of the Streets successfully sold out the Perth Concert Hall in a joint concert with the Perth Male Voice Choir and Working Voices. They went on to foster a singing relationship with Mercedes Girls College and staged another successful joint concert at St George's Cathedral in 2009.
