Devil Dub, released in 1998 on Black Hole, was the result of a lot of time, live parts played by Buckethead, Brain, and Mirv, and the difficult task of syncing a sampler, sequencers, mixers, and processed-challenged computers. But, despite the trouble, the album was well worth it. A unique and contemporary replay of dub as "dub hop," the Oakland group even landed on-stage with legendary Jamaican dub producer Scientist for their record release party.

Disciples of Retro-Tech followed in 2001 on Stray Records. For this album, Ben Wa revisited electro -- an early-'80s mix of hip-hop and electro-pop -- to craft a set that deftly utilizes retro keyboards, kitschy synthesizers, and Kraftwerk computer melodies for a Chemical Brothers danceable flair. ~ Charles Spano
