Azuli’s output began with Chocolate Fudge’s ‘In A Fantasy’ (1991), a collaboration between Miles Morgan, ‘Baby’ Sean Casey and Larry Dundas, and the Disco Elements and Sensory Elements EPs. The first two of these were released bedecked with New York telephone numbers and shrinkwrapped to give the impression of being imports. The following year saw Underground Mass featuring Lisa White’s ‘Music (Takes Control)’ and ‘Didn’t I’. The label continued to expand, bringing other catalogues such as Paramodo from the USA and their own Gyroscope under the Black Market/Azuli umbrella. The Azuli roster has subsequently expanded to include Andrea Mendez, while label stalwart Romanthony enjoyed a major hit with ‘In The Mix’, a disco/house groover released as a tribute to Tony Humphries, with his name used repeatedly as its hookline. Romanthony had been discovered by Piccioni on one of his frequent trips to the USA. Chocolate Fudge (as Mount Rushmore) and Underground Mass (as Booker T) went on to establish themselves as leading UK remix teams.
