A. Spencer Barefield is a sensitive, understated guitarist despite the fact he played, for a time, with high-voltage bandleader Roscoe Mitchell.
The Detroit-based guitarist's acoustic riffs, licks and phrases found a home in Mitchell's Sound/Space Ensembles during the '70s and '80s. Barefield has also recorded for Sound Aspects, CAC (Xenogenesis 2000) and Trans-African as a leader, working with Oliver Lake, Anthony Holland, Hugh Ragin, Richard Davis, Andrew Cyrille, the Ballade String Quartet and Tani Tabbal among others. Barefield has also served as Director of the Creative Arts Collective, based in Detroit. ~ Ron Wynn and Michael G. Nastos
