French-Canadian black metal band Asgard was founded in 1997 by former Gorguts drummer Steve McDonald with rhythm guitarist Jeffrey Plamondon, afterwards borrowing vocalist Patrick Guérin and guitarist Stéphane Dussault from local band Respectable just long enough to record an eponymous four-song EP.
But this failed to draw much attention to the group outside the walls of its home base of Québec City, and when McDonald departed to rejoin Gorguts, Asgard would endure a Spinal Tap-like stream of temporary musicians in the next few years. Finally, they reemerged in 2002 with a proper debut, Cold Season, and a lineup consisting of Jeffrey Plamondon on guitar and vocals, Raynald Clavet on lead guitar, and Luc Gaulin handling drums. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
