Morrissey has his sights on Broadway.
The former Smiths frontman will perform for the first time on the Broadway stage at New York’s Lunt-Fontanne Theater for seven nights in May, it was announced Monday. A statement regarding the show describes it as an “intimate yet exciting exploration of Morrissey’s expansive career,” that will incorporate music from his early days to his upcoming new record California Son: a collection of ’60s and ’70s classic covers out May 24.
The upcoming record follows his acclaimed 11th studio album Low in High School and sees Morrissey take on covers of songs by the likes of Joni Mitchell, Dionne Warwick, and Bob Dylan as well as more obscure musicians of the time, such as early gay icon Jobriath and political activist Phil Ochs. The collection also boasts collaborations with alt-rock royalty including Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day), Ed Droste (Grizzly Bear), Sameer Gadhia (Young the Giant), and LP.
Morrissey follows in the pop/rock footsteps of other artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Barry Manilow, and Hugh Jackman who have also staged concert-style Broadway productions.
Tickets for Morrissey’s Broadway residency go on sale Friday. See the full list of dates below.
