Things are getting even creepier...

The first trailer has dropped for season 3 of The Handmaids Tale, and it looks like it could be the darkest offering to date.

Although offering little in the way of new footage, the first trailer goes far in establishing the deeply sinister tone that has been weaved through the show so far.

It opens with dystopian images of new born babies being cuddled and women working in the nuclear fields while a male voice-over offers an unsettling background to it all.

“It’s morning again in America,” says the male voice.

“Today, more women are going to work than ever before in our country’s history.”

Rather cleverly, the advert is a direct send-up of Ronald Reagan’s 1984 campaign advert Morning in America, which directly inspired Margaret Atwood’s novels.

Unsurprisingly, things go a bit awry later on as the idyllic images make way for flames billowing across the stream.

“Wake up, America,” says the voice of Offred.

“Morning’s over.”

It also offers our first look at Offred after she decided to remain in Gilead at the end of the show’s second season last year.

As well as a third season of the show, fans can also expect a sequel of the original novel – announced by Margaret Attwood last year.

Announcing the news on Twitter last year , Atwood wrote: “Yes indeed to those who asked: I’m writing a sequel to The #HandmaidsTale. #TheTestaments is set 15 years after Offred’s final scene and is narrated by three female characters”.
It will be released in September.
