Beyonce has announced that she is donating $100,000 to four historically black universities in America, after establishing a scholarship program last year.
The ‘Lemonade’ singer will use her BeyGOOD philanthropic initiative to establish the Homecoming Scholars Award program, awarding $100,000 in scholarships to America’s Xavier, Wilberforce, Tuskegee and Bethune-Cookman universities.
The announcement comes only days after Beyonce became the first black woman to headline Coachella festival – with her performance touching on the history of black universities by including varsity-themed backing dancers and marching bands.
Announcing the new initiative, BeyGOOD boss Ivy McGregor said: “We salute the rich legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
“We honor all institutions of higher learning for maintaining culture and creating environments for optimal learning which expands dreams and the seas of possibilities for students.”
Beyonce’s historic headline performance at Coachella last weekend attracted rave reviews, with NME’s official verdict hailing it as a “dream that feels heaven-sent”.
