When ankle-biters attack! Young Yizzy – with the emphasis very much on the ‘Young’ – is the future of the South London grime scene, emerging last year aged just 16 and already blazing a trail through the grime firmament like a flaming-Nike’d comet. Here’s everything you need to know about the self-styled ‘Grime Kid’.

Who is Young Yizzy?

Yizzy emerged, crew-less, from the South London grime scene in January 2016, after producing an EP called ‘Insanity’ with the likes of JME, Swifta Beater and K1 while still at school and personally hammering away at radio stations like Reprezent until they played it.

“It was just me saying how I’m going to take this seriously,” he told Nation Of Billions. “I’m going to have something here to say you know what? I’ve done five songs, got the beats on my own, went studio on my own, wrote this on my own, sent emails to the radio on my own, I pushed it, spat the bars, practiced over and over, like, I did this all by myself – this isn’t unrealistic from when people are actually responding back to me, this could be a reality.”

Advised by MC Koder, Yizzy set about releasing a guesting on tracks with the likes of MCTuckz and IronSoul throughout 2016, developing his edgy, hyperspeed future grime style and pricking the ears of Radio 1, Rinse FM, NME and the Guardian as he went. He ended the year by dropping the raging and adrenalin-pumped ‘Grime Kid’ like a skibby-dibby hand grenade.

What’s the latest on Young Yizzy?

Previewed with the furious, itchy-skinned ‘LDN’ in December 2016, Yizzy’s debut EP ‘This Is Life’ arrived in April 2017 to great blog acclaim. “Densely-packed bars tempered with icy beats that come fully-formed and sure-footed,” wrote Complex, praising his grasp of grime history, and Yizzy himself was ken to acknowledge his heritage.

"It's my first body of work and marks my place in the grime scene," he told Complex. "It speaks about my area and where I come from, and takes grime back to its old school days. People will learn about me and my story on ‘This Is Life’.”

“It kinda came easy to me because I literally just spoke about what’s going on,” he said to Nation of Billions. “I can’t be an artist if I can’t tell my story or at least give people something to go on, something genuine, or meaningful and open.”

Where can I see Young Yizzy live?

Yizzy is set to appear at the Wiley-riling Glastonbury festival in June, having made the final of the festival’s Emerging Talent competition. No doubt he’ll pump out such a testosterone powerhouse of a set we should expect Michael Eavis’ hair to have grown back by the time he’s finished.
