"We really like the idea of being present at all times..."
Rollo Doherty, Jack Raeder, James Wolfe and Toby Richards have been playing music for some time now, but they all did it in their respective bands. One day, the four musicians got together for a jam session, and soon that sparked what has become their current project, ISLAND. They released their first EP, Girl, in 2015 and have dropped A Place Like You earlier this year. And they're not stopping there. They're gearing up to release another EP, Live & Acoustic, soon and play their biggest headlining show to date on May 3 at London's Heaven. Myspace spoke with Richards, who plays drums in the band, to learn more about ISLAND. Read the interview below.
Hometown: London
Homebase: London and Amsterdam
How did the band get together?
We were playing in separate bands before, and one day as a joke, thought it'd be fun to join forces as a self-proclaimed supergroup. Something kind of unexpectedly clicked when we played together for the first time, so thought we'd give it a shot.
What's the significance behind the band name?
ISLAND is a really strong yet simple word that just stood out for us. There's no real deep meaning to it unfortunately, but being nameless for two years got a bit frustrating.
Who are you currently listening to?
I'm always on the hunt for the latest vibes, and my Spotify Discover Weekly plays a huge part in what I find these days. Particularly loving Matt Maltese at the moment, Cigarettes After Sex and Klangstof to pick a few. And the new Future Islands record is a banger.
And who should we be paying attention to from the UK right now?
Otzeki, Leif Erikson, Matt Maltese.
What's your favorite song to perform off A Place You Like?
"All You Ever Needed Was Love." It's a very dynamically driven song, in which we bring everything right down and then let it all come crashing back in. A bit of an emotional roller coaster.
You released A Place You Like in February and are now releasing Live & Acoustic. What spawned the release of another EP so soon?
We really like the idea of being present at all times, and continuing to bring out fresh music is a key part of that. The Live & Acoustic EP is more a re-work of songs we've already released though, so we consider it more as bonus material.
How did you choose what songs to do live and acoustic versions of?
It was a mix of what worked best with the set up & also which songs have been the most well-received online. In theory all of our songs can work quite well stripped back, so we might put together another Live & Acoustic EP at some point in the future.
When recording Live & Acoustic, was there a point when you realized that you like the new versions better? Which song? Why?
I don't think we got to that point actually. It's always fun to strip things back & we're really proud of how these came out, but playing the tunes as they were written, loud & live, is still our favorite way of expressing them.
You've been touring a lot this year. What's the best and worst parts of being on the road?
We've had some really great times on the road this year already. I personally really enjoy driving, especially through Europe, and definitely don't see it as a negative part of touring like some people do. Obviously we have some really early mornings & late nights, but the adrenaline keeps you going. We can be really tired & quiet an hour before a show, but just at the right moment, the reserve energy kicks in. For me the only bad thing about touring is not having enough clothing options in the van. I hate packing & prefer to choose what I wear on the day, so if I could, I'd bring every single item I own on a massive clothes rail. Proper diva style.
What's in your tour survival kits?
Some emergency Lady Grey tea bags and a thousand pairs of drum sticks.
What are ISLAND's plans for the summer?
We're playing a couple of cool festivals, but for the most part we'll be in the studio -- recording our debut album.
