When life gives you lemons, make a kick-ass record.
The ambition and passion to create music has never floundered for Canadian indie-rockers, Mother Mother, and that determination lead them into the studio to begin recording their recently released, fifth studio album called No Culture. However, for the first time in years, frontman and lead guitarist Ryan Guldemond had chosen to embrace sobriety at a time when many musicians rely most heavily on the unencumbered, imaginative effects of drugs and alcohol. The pressures of producing music through new eyes and in the midst of recovery proved to be incredibly great, and Guldemond became despondent.
With time and the continued support from those around him, Guldemond eventually found the inspiration to begin writing again and penned the record’s first track, “Love Stuck.” Flanked by sister Molly Guldemond on vocals and keyboard, Jasmin Parkin on keyboard and vocals, Ali Siadat on drums and Mike Young on bass, the quintet persisted and No Culture reached completion, debuting February 10, 2017 on Def Jam.
Mother Mother’s “Free” is a reflection of those experiences and the process of building a song from the group up. “[It] was a song written during the album making process,” singer Ryan Guldemond explained. “About halfway through we realized we needed a song that centered around a crushing guitar riff. And so, thus, the song ‘Free’ was born to serve that motive.”
The band is set to tour with KONGOS beginning in early May, but until then, you can enjoy their “Free” studio session exclusively on Myspace.
