The Idaho-based rockers channel folk and emo on the new song.
In over just four minutes, Western Daughter’s "Skinny Water" opens up a ball of emotion.
After a rollicking intro, lead singer Taylor Robert Hawkins sets the tone for the song: "The river’s moving fast / But we still shatter it like glass." Hawkins’ tense, melancholic vocals and jangly, layered guitars run throughout the song.
"’Skinny Water’ is actually the first song we wrote for Driftwood Songs. It was a bit of a departure for us, and in a way, it became the road map for where we wanted to take the record," says guitarist Cameron Brizzee to Myspace.
"The song uses imagery from what should have been a leisurely day spent in nature (in this case, fishing with my dad in Montana) to illustrate the mercurial nature of our lives and relationships, a theme that runs throughout most of the record."
