Reality used to be a staple of hip-hop, but with more and more artists embracing the concept of fantasy, real life stories have become harder to come by.

gLife is here to rap about real life.

After a full year on the road with the likes of Madchild (of Swollen Members), Slaine (of la Coka Nostra), and Adlib, the Utah rapper will be hitting listeners with his third solo album, My Rise, on January 10. In anticipation of this, gLife released a video for the latest single off of the album, “Game Changed,” which features the aforementioned Slaine, and Myspace has the exclusive premiere.

Wanting to know more about the collaborative effort, we caught up with gLife to ask him about “Game Changed.”

What were some of the most important things you wanted to get off of your chest with this song, and video?

That things have changed. It really does seem like "it's more about selfies than dealing with pain.”

This song tells a story, a story that’s really relatable to so many emcees, and people in general. [It’s] the story of trying so hard, day and night, to accomplish a dream, making a way for yourself in this world and having all of that hard work minimized, marginalized and taken advantage of.

I wrote “Game Changed” at a time when I didn't know what was next in my life, and Slaine was really feeling it. He chose this song out of a handful of other strong songs to collaborate on, saying that this one sticks out. I felt his verse also told MY story, which supports the point that so many people can relate to it.

I read Slaine has been hugely influential in your life and career. How did you two link up, and what kind of things have you learned from him?

We met through DJ Street Jesus — a longtime colleague and friend of mine. They had met years prior when Street Jesus booked Slaine's old group, Special Teamz, to play in our hometown of Salt Lake City, UT. Slaine and I had one show together lined up for Salt Lake City, so I reached out to him to see if we could collaborate on a song, or some more shows. He replied quickly, which reminds me, I used to tweet to Slaine every now and then when he would drop a new album, or a new movie — he was in The Town, Killing Them Softly and starred in some lesser known movies. I’ve seen them all, and he would ALWAYS tweet me back.

We collaborated on “Game Changed,” and then the luckiest thing in my career happened: Slaine called me asking about my minivan and said there was an opening to jump on tour with him and Jaysaun (also from Special Teamz).  From there, DJ Street Jesus and I went on a two week tour with Slaine and Jaysaun, in my minivan, across the western-region of the US. It was the greatest time!

I learned from Slaine that you don't have to party, drink, do drugs, or anything like that on tour, and to hit the gym in the mornings. He showed me things like how to handle a crowd that just wants to see the headliner, how to capture their attention. He is a professional on the road, so I learned how to act more like a professional, as well.

“Game Changed” is off of your upcoming album, My Rise. How much does “Game Changed” set the tone for the album, and what are some of the other topics you’re tackling on My Rise?

I think it sets the tone really well. The tone for the album overall is a little bit dark, deep, hard-hitting, reality check time. It tackles the issues of losing loved ones to drugs, suicide and even cop-related killings — the things that keep me up at night. It talks about depression, anxiety, love ... I feel there's a good range of emotions coming out on this album.

Earlier you mentioned touring with Slaine. How much traveling have you done, and how many miles have you gone, all in the name of hip-hop?

I've done more traveling than I can remember! My first tour was right around 2008-2009. It was sponsored by Seedless brand clothing out of California. I've done several tours every year since then.

2016 was a big year of touring for me, starting with our own headlining tour to and from SXSW and jumping on tour with Slaine and Jaysaun. Then I went on tour with Adlib for ten days; I went on a four day tour with Madchild from Swollen Members and I hit Indie Week Canada for four shows with my good pals Family Grind from Detroit, who I will be touring with again February 15 - April 2, 2017.

It has been a blast. I’ve destroyed two vans, and I'm on my third transmission in my minivan right now. Hoping this album will pop and we can upgrade to a nicer mode of transportation!
